Lehigh County officials are trying something new in the battle against opioid addiction.
They’ve launched a program called Blue Guardian that targets drug users who are given a dose of Narcan to reverse an overdose.
Within 48 to 72 hours of overdosing, these patients will be visited at home by a police officer and a certified recovery specialist. The goal is to reengage the individual in accessing treatment and to demonstrate police are showing support to get the individual treatment.
The home visit is designed to be brief, lasting no longer than 15 minutes.
The Blue Guardian program also offers resources to patients’ family members.
