Kratom is a tropical tree which is native to countries in southeast Asia. It has recently gained attention due to possessing opioid and stimulant like properties. I first heard of it in 2016 on the Joe Rogan Podcast when he had filmmaker Chris Bell on the show.
Chris is know for the steroid Documentary Bigger, Faster, Stronger and had recently completed his newest film, Prescription Thugs. Prescription Thugs is a documentary about the pharmaceutical industry and the overwhelming prescription drug addiction sweeping America. Ironically, Chris got addicted to prescription drugs during production and couldn’t come off no matter what he did. Chris told Joe Rogan the only thing that allowed him to kick his addiction was using Kratom.
Kratom has come under a lot of heat over the past couple years. But it also has a ton of support from people who have used it to treat chronic pain and kick life draining addictions. I decided to collect as much information as I can to compose a solid article for people wanting to know more about it. And I have also decided to give Kratom a try to give an unbiased opinion on the controversial plant.
What are the benefits of taking Kratom
These benefits vary heavily off what color, or strain you are using. But here are the most common reasons why people use Kratom.
- Pain Relief -Kratom quickly relives pain by causing out body to release serotonin and dopamine which dull the pain receptors. This opiod-like trait is by far the most common application for Kratom.
- Anxiety Relief – Kratom produces an overwhelming sense of calmness and is often used to help with symptoms of Chemical imbalance such as chronic strees, anxiety, and depression.
- Pharmaceutical Addiction Recovery – Due to certain strains possessing strong opioid like traits, people have been using it to get off of prescription painkillers. Supplementing with Kratom is allow those who are struggling to stay clean, an ability to do so without the crash and other negative side effects.
- Improved energy levels – Certain strains of Kratom improve the metabolic process and help to fight symptoms of fatigue.
- Improved Cognitive function – White kratom can help improve mental alertness and helps users to feel stimulated.
What is the difference between the various colors and strains?
There are many different strains of Kratom. But to keep this simple we are going to divide this up between the three different colored strains. The colors are not derived from the leafs, rather the color of the veins and stems running through the leafs. Each color variation results in a completely different effect from one another due to have different chemical makeups.
WHITE KRATOM – The best way that I can describe white Kratom is its very similar to the feeling of using no-tropics. Most users associate the white strains as being more stimulating and enhancing positive moods. It also leaves the user feeling of euphoria. Many people use this in place of stimulants like caffeine because it also promotes cognitive alertness.
RED KRATOM – Red veined Kratom is the most popular stain currently being sold. This strain is known to relieve pain , relax muscles, and provides a strong feeling of calmness/relaxation. Many people use this stain to help treat insomnia, muscle soreness, and symptoms of chronic pain. Red Kratom is often used as natural replacement to pharmaceutical painkillers. Many people successfully treat withdraw symptoms from opioid addiction by using stronger stains of red Kratom.
GREEN KRATOM – Green Kratom falls in the middle between the white and red strains. It basically helps alleviate pain like the Red strains without causing you to feel drowsy or over-relaxed. But like the white strains, it helps promote an enhanced positive mood and alertness. This strain is often taken by people who have issues with social anxiety or introverted people who need to feel more comfortable in social settings.
Is Kratom Addictive?
Most folks within the Kratom community claim that it is not addictive. However, I have found testimonies of a few folks who claim otherwise. And after listening to their stories, my conclusion is that if its abused, it can become habit-forming. My take on it is that if you take large doses on a daily basis, you WILL become dependent on it.
The human body is always trying to remain at a balanced level of homeostasis. When the brain becomes accustomed to having a compound constantly provided to it, there will be symptoms of withdraw once it is taken away.
But, this is a common theme with many things that humans consume. Just think about people who drink coffee every morning or drink pre-workout. They too will have negative withdraw symptoms if you take away their daily source of caffeine. I know that I get headaches and feel lethargic for almost a whole week when I don’t have caffeine.
The point I’m trying to get across here is to have some common sense with this stuff. Unless you have some sort of medical condition like fibromyalgia or sever anxiety issues, there is no reason to be taking large amounts of Kratom every single day.
Just have some common sense an remember that more is NOT always better.
I’ve read that many recreational users find that once they reach the feeling of euphoria, they made the mistake of taking more. Then they find themselves at the point of diminishing return because they start to feel like crap and soon loose their euphoric state. I have found that once you find a dose that works, just stick with it.
Is Kratom Legal?
There is a fight to keep it legal in every state because many people see it a s lifesaver. However, since it acts on the same opioid receptors as prescription painkillers, the FDA and DEA see it ass another drug.
And lets face the facts here….anytime big pharma’s sales are impacted, something is going to be made illegal!
Here is the legal as of February 2018. People who want to use Kratom need to be aware that it is currently illegal in the following states:
My experience with Kratom
I found a company that sells a ‘Beginners Pack‘ which was perfect for me since I never tried it before. This pack came with 25g of the three most popular strains. This included Red Maeng Da, Green Malay, and White Bali. I chose this so I could try each one of the different color/strains and decide which on was best suited for me.
I really don’t like the doped up groggy feeling on being on painkillers. So I was a little hesitant of the red strain and tried it last.
However I do have some joint paint in my elbows and knees that I sometimes have to take not so liver friendly stuff like tylenol for. Years of weight lifting and rehabing my rental properties has certainly taken a tole on my joints. So I was optimistic about getting some relief on that.
However, I was more into the White and Green strains because they worked more cognitively. And I personally have fleeting issues with feeling hesitant to really let loose in social settings. And I also really no-tropics and anything else that can help give me an extra kick.
I certainly feel that Kratom is a way safer alternative than using pharmaceutical drugs for people looking for serious pain relief.
